Revently there have been moves by so-called private equity consortiums to take over household names such as Qantas and Coles.Behind the term "private equity" hides good old "asset stripping". It is not about making things. It's about making money from money, buying up companies, stripping them and selling them off with a mountain of debt. Here we reproduce an article from Britain's Socialist Appeal which explains what this is all about.

A new united left party, Die Linke, will be formed in Germany in mid-June. After a (likely) successful and overwhelming outcome of the postal ballot by all members of the traditionally Eastern based Linkspartei.PDS (L.PDS) and the more Western based Electoral Alternative for Social Justice (WASG), both parties will dissolve themselves in simultaneous conferences in Berlin and then merge into the united party Die Linke the day after. With some 60,000 members coming from the L.PDS and some 10,000 from the WASG, this new party is the most serious political formation to the left of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) for generations. It has 53 Members of Parliament at present and won a share of 8.7 in the 2005 Bundestag (federal parliament) elections.

The workers of Sanitarios Maracay, a company in Aragua, Venezuela, which has been occupied and run under workers' control for more than 5 months, have been subject to brutal repression and arrest on Tuesday, April 24 as they were travelling by bus to Caracas in order to participate in a national march in defence of workers' control and the process of expropriations launched by president Chavez in 2005.
